5 Exciting Highlights to Look Forward to at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics

As the 2024 Paris Olympics came to a close, with Tom Cruise taking the Olympic flag during the closing ceremony, the world’s attention now shifts to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. With just four years to go, anticipation is already building for what promises to be a spectacular event in the City of Angels. Here are five highlights that make the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics an event to look forward to.

1. Los Angeles Hosts the Olympics for the Third Time

Los Angeles will become only the third city in history, after London and Paris, to host the Summer Olympics three times. Having previously hosted in 1932 and 1984, LA will again be the center of the sporting world in 2028. This will also mark the first time that the city hosts the Paralympics, further highlighting its commitment to inclusivity and global sportsmanship.

2. When Will the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics Take Place?

The 2028 Olympics are scheduled to open on July 14 and conclude on July 30, with the Paralympics following from August 15 to 27. The event’s official slogan, “Follow The Sun,” perfectly captures the sunny, vibrant spirit of Los Angeles and the energy of the games.

3. Five New Sports to Debut

The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will see the return and introduction of several new sports:

  • Cricket: Making a comeback after last appearing in the 1900 Olympics.
  • Lacrosse: One of North America’s oldest sports, with a new format for 2028.
  • Baseball: Returning after being excluded from the Paris 2024 Olympics.
  • Squash: Making its Olympic debut.
  • Flag Football: A non-contact version of American football, also debuting in 2028.

The Paralympics will introduce paraclimbing, where athletes will compete by scaling a 15-meter wall, adding a new level of excitement to the games.

4. A Diverse Range of Logos

Unlike previous Olympics, which typically use a single logo, the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will feature a variety of designs to reflect the city’s diversity. The LA28 logo will have 35 different versions, each with a unique “A” design created by different artists. This approach highlights the creativity and cultural richness of Los Angeles, symbolizing the city’s dynamic spirit as it prepares to host the games.

5. A Sustainable Olympics with No New Venues

In a bid for sustainability, Los Angeles aims to host a “car-free” Olympics, encouraging spectators to use public transportation to reach most venues. The city is also focusing on utilizing existing infrastructure rather than building new permanent structures. Notably, the SoFi Stadium, one of the world’s most expensive sports venues, will serve as the site for the opening and closing ceremonies, and will be transformed into the largest swimming arena in Olympic history, accommodating up to 38,000 spectators.

As we bid farewell to Paris and look ahead to Los Angeles, the 2028 Olympics promises to be a unique and exciting chapter in Olympic history.
