Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Beta Review: Adrenaline-Fueled Action and Tactical Chaos!

Treyarch and Raven Software have teamed up to bring us Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, the 21st entry in the Call of Duty franchise and the 7th installment in the Black Ops series. The recent Beta focused exclusively on the multiplayer mode, allowing players to experience four game modes across four diverse maps. While there’s no zombie mode or campaign content, the multiplayer action alone was enough to make me dive deep into this Beta, and here’s what I discovered.

Omnimovement: A Game-Changer

One of the most exciting features of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is the introduction of the Omnimovement system. Unlike traditional FPS games, this system allows for smooth, multidirectional movement. Players can sprint forward, strafe left or right, or even dash backward with ease, giving a fresh twist to tactical mobility.

The new movement also includes sprint-jumps, slides, and crouch maneuvers, making positioning more critical than ever. In maps with water elements, you can seamlessly escape or launch attacks, thanks to Omnimovement’s versatility. Plus, there’s a dedicated training session for those looking to master this innovative feature.

Modes to Master

The Beta offers four thrilling multiplayer modes:

  • Domination: Players capture and hold three control points to rack up points. The more areas your team controls, the higher your score.
  • Hardpoint: Only one control point is active at a time. Strategic timing and teamwork are key as you battle for control of the next Hardpoint.
  • Team Deathmatch: A classic mode where quick respawns and fast-paced action keep you constantly engaged.
  • Kill Order (HVT): Each team has a High-Value Target (HVT) to protect while hunting down the enemy’s HVT. This mode adds a layer of strategy, as the HVT doesn’t die immediately but goes into a downed state, giving the team a chance to revive.

Maps: From Trainyards to Desert Outposts

The four maps in this Beta showcase a variety of combat environments:

  • Derelict (Train Graveyard): Set in an abandoned Appalachian Mountain train yard, this small map is packed with tight corners and fast-paced action.
  • SCUD (Military Outpost): A desert military base full of hidden paths and plenty of cover. SCUD emphasizes tactical play, with options for surprise attacks.
  • Skyline (Resort Rooftop): Set atop a luxury resort, this indoor-only map brings close-quarters combat and a touch of class to the battlefield.
  • Rewind (Shopping Plaza): With 50% of the action outdoors and the rest taking place in a massive shopping mall, Rewind caters to fans of both indoor and outdoor skirmishes.

Customizing Your Arsenal

The classic Gunsmith feature returns, allowing players to fully customize their weapons. You can tweak everything from stocks to grips, reducing recoil or increasing aim speed. One improvement I’d suggest is showing unlocked attachments at a glance to enhance the user experience, especially for new players.

In addition to weapon mods, players can equip tactical gear like grenades and gadgets like the Trophy System (which disables enemy explosives). The Perks system is divided into three categories: Enforcer, Recon, and Strategist. Equipping perks from the same category grants a special bonus, and the Wildcard system offers additional benefits like equipping two primary weapons or extra perks.

Progression and Streaks

The Battle Pass style progression system returns, offering a range of rewards from skins to weapons. Once you reach level 4, you can start customizing your loadouts, so aim to hit that level quickly to unlock those customization options.

Scorestreaks make a return, with classic tools like UAV and Counter UAV making their presence felt. There are some fun new streaks, too, like the RC-XD (a remote-controlled car with explosives) and the Hellstorm missile for massive area damage.

Beta Impressions

After six hours of chaotic, adrenaline-fueled gameplay, I’m more than hyped for the full release. The gunfights were intense, the movement system adds a new layer of strategy, and the quick-paced matches (around 10 minutes each) ensured that no two battles were the same. If the Beta is anything to go by, Black Ops 6 is set to continue the series’ tradition of fast, explosive multiplayer action.

If you want to experience the action yourself, the open Beta is available from September 7 to September 10, 2024. Don’t miss out!
